Understanding Your Eating Programme (UYE)

The Understanding Your Eating Programme (UYE) is suitable for emotional eating/stress eating/binge eating and bulimia.

The Understanding Your Eating Programme (UYE) has been developed from research carried out by Julia Buckroyd, Emeritus Professor of Counselling of the University of Hertfordshire and Honorary Fellow of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. The Programme is designed for people who are aware that their overeating is driven by emotions rather than by hunger.

The programme is a 6–12 session course. It can be done on a one-on-one basis or in a group. There will be an initial assessment to discuss whether the course is right for you and whether you prefer individual therapy or being in a group. The sessions will help you start thinking about how you might be using food to manage feelings and life in general. This programme is not a diet or weightloss plan –instead it is designed to help you gain better control of your eating.

In our work together we will explore the eating habits you have formed over time, where you feel stuck and what triggers your eating behaviour. I am interested in discovering how your emotions are connected with your eating behaviour and how we can find new ways of managing your feelings, thereby building stronger emotional resilience. I will also be interested in learning about and exploring your lifestyle, the different factors that influence your life today and how all this may have an impact on your eating and how you handle challenges in life. All this will allow us to create new coping skills, enabling you to establish a better relationship with food.

These are the topics that we will cover throughout the duration of the programme:

Session 1 – Initial 90 minutes consultation

Session 2 – Emotional Eating and the Language of Feelings

Session 3 – Self-soothing

Session 4 – Self-esteem

Session 5 – Body-esteem

Session 6 – Relationships
